Golf clubs – irons vs. woods?

Why is it that woods (including drivers and hybrids) are typically given a head cover, while irons are not? Putters seem to go either way (covered or uncovered) depending on the individual golfer, but the iron/wood division seems pretty much universal.

Can anyone shed some light on this please?

Thanks.

Nowadays, head covers are more for decoration than function.
Drivers, Woods, Irons, etc are all made from material that isn’t
effected by weather. Now if you are concerned about scratches
or some bag handler chucking your stuff around and putting dings
into them, covers are a good idea.

But really, its just about bag decoration these days.
