Red X Putter
Peugeot 306 shuddering?
Peugeot 306 Genoa, 1994 N Reg.
Caberetta fixed, new fuel filter, new High Tension pipes, new spark plugs, new battery, has had Red X in engine.
All that is done, and yet the car still shudders a lot when I go up a hill, and reaching slow speeds.
Either loses power, all puttering, and sometimes a “blowout?” from exhaust.
Could it be the air pipe connected to the caretta/air filter? A blockage maybe?
Or a coil pack?
I have no idea, without being there. The first thing that comes to mind is…. somehow two spark plug wires (on the distributor cap?) got switched positions??
IF you have a 1994 with a carburettor, I don’t think you have a coil pack, but a coil and plug wires to the distributor cap? Am I correct?
The firing order of all Peugeot 4 cylinder engines is the same; 1 3 4 2, #1 plug being next to the clutch end of the engine.
ADDED ONE HOUR LATER:
‘blowout’ from exhaust. I think you mean a ”backfire”. This happens when a spark plug fires at the wrong moment, and the exhast valve is not completely closed on THAT cylinder. Petrol vapour explodes, and quickly exits the open valve, resonating in the exhast pipe. One MORE reason to suspect your spark plugs are firing at the wrong time.
Other reasons: 1.your engine needs an adjustment of the timing.
2. Your ” vacuum advance” of the timing is not working, or is disconnected from distributor to the carburettor.
3. Your valves are very corroded, or need adjustment too. You need a ”compression test” or a ”leak down test” for each cylinder.
AIR? Petrol burns in the presence of ENOUGH oxygen. On a hill, you need more petrol and air for the increased load / stress on the engine. Is your air filter clean enough?? The engine sucks its own requirements as you increase the demand for it.
CLUTCH JUDDER / Shudder. This happens when your clutch disc is very thin, needs replacement, and you have no acceleration for hills, overtaking slower cars, or acceleration in general.
